What Your Lawn Is Telling You in Late Summer
September is a good time to take a closer look at your lawn. After a long stretch of summer heat, you may start noticing changes that weren’t there earlier in the season. Some areas may look thinner, while others have held up well.
These changes are worth paying attention to before the season changes. A lawn can respond differently from one part of the yard to another, and what you see on the surface can sometimes point to a problem underneath.
Look at the Sunny Areas
Grass growing in full sun has been dealing with higher temperatures and losing moisture faster throughout the season. Areas beside driveways and sidewalks can take even more heat because the pavement stays warm.
You may notice the grass losing some of its color or becoming thinner in these spots. A dry-looking area doesn’t necessarily need more water. If the soil is compacted, moisture may have trouble reaching the roots.
Thin Spots Tell a Story
Thinning grass can show up gradually. A worn path may have developed after months of foot traffic. Grass near the house may not receive enough sunlight, while an open section of the lawn may struggle with the afternoon heat.
Take a look at the soil in these areas, too. If it feels hard or is difficult to penetrate, compaction may be limiting root growth. This can be especially noticeable in areas that receive regular foot traffic.
More seed won’t fix the problem if the soil underneath isn’t giving new grass the conditions it needs to establish.
Don’t Forget the Soil
Soil problems can be easy to overlook because they happen below the grass. One clue may appear after a heavy rain, when water sits on the surface instead of soaking into the ground. Another may be a section of lawn where the soil has become noticeably hard.
Grass roots need air and water to grow. Compacted soil leaves less room for both, which can make it harder for turf to recover after a stressful summer.
Aeration can help relieve that compaction by creating openings in the soil and allowing air and water to reach the root zone more easily. For a lawn that has been under regular use, improving the condition of the soil can be an important part of helping the grass recover.
See What Happens After Rain
A lawn that looks dry isn’t necessarily a lawn that needs more water.
After the next heavy rain, take a look at how the yard dries. Does one section stay wet long after the rest of the lawn? Does water collect in the same spot each time? Does another area dry out much faster?
These differences can point to very different problems. Water that remains in one part of the yard may indicate an issue with drainage or grading. A dry patch may have more to do with soil conditions or how water reaches that section of the lawn.
Before adding more water, it’s worth finding out where the water is actually going.
Before You Treat the Lawn
Before deciding what your lawn needs, take a closer look at the areas that aren’t performing as well. A few things are worth noting:
- Grass that stays thin in the same area year after year.
- Soil that feels hard after regular foot traffic.
- Water that remains on the lawn after a storm.
- Areas that dry out much faster than the rest of the yard.
- Turf that struggles next to driveways or other paved surfaces.
None of these signs points to one treatment on its own. They simply give you more information about what may be happening below the grass.
Choosing the Right Treatment
Aeration can help when compacted soil is limiting the space available to grass roots. Top dressing takes a different approach, adding a thin layer of material across the lawn to improve conditions near the surface. The condition of the lawn determines which service makes sense and where it should be used.
A thin area caused by regular foot traffic is a different problem from a low spot that stays wet after a storm. Treating the grass without addressing the reason it is struggling can leave you with the same problem next season.
