Warm Season (Bermuda Turf/Zoysia Turf)

Warm-season Bermuda turf performs best with consistent care and timely maintenance. Our turf services focus on strengthening your lawn, improving its appearance, and managing issues caused by heat, soil conditions, and seasonal changes.

Warm Season Turf: Bermuda and Zoysia

The most common types of warm season turf in North Carolina are Bermuda and Zoysia.

For warm season turf our programs follow this treatment schedule:

  • Apply fertilizer throughout the growing season.
  • Apply broadleaf and grassy weed control as needed.
  • Winter broadleaf and grassy weed control
  • Winter pre-emergent with broadleaf and grassy weed control
  • Early spring broadleaf and grassy weed control
  • Spring granular starter fertilizer for green-up, broadleaf and grassy weed control
  • Late spring, this is the time we recommend sand leveling or top dressing for your warm season turf
  • Core aeration is completed when the turf is out of dormancy, and can be completed at any time during the growing season
  • Late spring, De-thatching is completed when the turf is out of dormancy, and can be completed at any time during the growing season
  • Late spring, Verti cutting is completed when the turf is out of dormancy, and can be completed at any time during the growing season
  • Spring liquid high nitrogen fertilizer with root growth stimulator, micronutrients, broadleaf and grassy weed control and liquid insecticide
  • Early summer liquid high nitrogen fertilizer, micronutrients, root growth stimulator, broadleaf and grassy weed control
  • Summer granular fertilizer with slow-release nitrogen, granular insecticide, broadleaf and grassy weed control
  • Late summer pre-emergent, high nitrogen fertilizer, micronutrients, root growth stimulator, broadleaf and grassy weed control
  • Early fall liquid fertilizer, micronutrients, liquid insecticide, broadleaf and grassy weed control
  • Mid fall pre-emergent, broadleaf and grassy weed control
  • Late fall broadleaf and grassy weed control
  • Watering is very important. If the turf is not properly watered, the desired results will not be achieved. We recommend watering at least one inch per week. This can be accomplished with rain and supplemental water. You must account for evaporation during the hot summer months to achieve the one-inch total per week. If a rainstorm produces a deluge of water, you may need to supplement water through the week to ensure proper saturation of the soil.
  • Proper mowing height for warm season turf is between 0.5” to 2.5”. We suggest grass recycling which means leaving the clippings on the turf so that when the clippings decay down, all the nutrients stay in the turf. This means frequent mowing or the use of a mulching deck mower. Do not leave large clumps of clippings on the turf, as this can cause damage.
