Pruning

Pruning is the intentional removal of specific parts of a plant—such as branches, stems, buds, or roots—to improve its health, shape, safety, and overall appearance. It is one of the most essential practices in landscape and garden care, used to guide plant structure, encourage vigorous growth, and prevent problems before they develop.

Pruning includes:

• Removing dead, damaged, or diseased branches to improve plant health
• Shaping and controlling plant size for a more attractive, balanced appearance
• Improving airflow and sunlight penetration to reduce disease risk
• Encouraging new growth, flowering, and fruit production
• Eliminating weak, crossing, or rubbing branches to strengthen structure
• Preventing hazards by removing limbs that could fall or obstruct walkways
• Supporting long-term plant health when done at the correct time and with proper technique

Insect Control

Insect control is the practice of monitoring, managing, and reducing harmful insect populations to shrubs, trees, and ornamental plants. It focuses on identifying damaging pests early, preventing injury to plants, and maintaining a healthy, balanced landscape ecosystem.

Insect control includes:

• Inspecting and identifying insects to determine whether they are harmful, beneficial, or neutral
• Monitoring plant conditions for signs of chewing, discoloration, thinning, or wilting
• Using cultural controls (proper watering, fertilization) to reduce pest pressure
• Applying mechanical or physical controls such as hand-removal or barriers when appropriate
• Encouraging beneficial insects that naturally reduce pest populations
• Using targeted insecticides only when necessary and appropriate for the pest

Fungicides

Fungicides are products used to prevent, suppress, or eliminate fungal diseases that ornamentals, shrubs, and trees. They work by killing fungal pathogens or stopping their ability to grow and spread, helping maintain healthy, resilient landscapes.

Fungicide practices include:

• Preventing or treating fungal diseases such as mildew, rust, blight, and leaf spot
• Stopping spore germination or fungal growth by disrupting key metabolic pathways
• Applying products as sprays or dusts depending on the plant and disease

Types of fungicides:

• Contact fungicides: Stay on the plant surface and protect only where applied
• Translaminar fungicides: Move from the sprayed side of a leaf to the unsprayed side
• Systemic fungicides: Absorbed and moved through plant tissues for deeper protection

Fungicides are most effective when applied preventatively before fungal spores infect plant tissue.

Fertilization

Fertilization involves adding key nutrients—primarily nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) to the soil so plants can grow vigorously, resist stress, and maintain healthy color and density. These nutrients fuel leaf growth, root development, and disease resistance.

Weed Control

Weed control is the practice of preventing, managing, and eliminating unwanted plants that compete with desirable turf and landscape vegetation for sunlight, water, and nutrients. Effective weed control keeps planting beds healthy, uniform, and visually appealing by reducing invasive or aggressive species.

Weed control includes:

• Identifying weeds and determining underlying causes
• Preventing new weeds with pre-emergent treatments
• Eliminating existing weeds with post-emergent herbicides
• Spot-treating stubborn or persistent species
• Monitoring and adjusting treatments over time
