Aeration should be done during the growing season, normally between May and August, and can be done more than once in a season. This service allows fertilizer to reach the root zone and breaks up soil compaction. Some people try to incorporate top dressing with aeration for their Bermuda and Zoysia. We recommend only applying granular fertilizer during aeration and then once the turf area has recovered, applying your top dressing.
In North Carolina, climate zone 7b, the aeration of Fescue turf is best completed in the fall months, usually mid-September through October. Along with aeration, this is also the best time to over-seed your Fescue lawn with a blue tag certified seed. Aeration allows the fertilizer to reach the root zone and breaks up soil compaction. We suggest overseeding be completed during this time as it gives the opportunity for the seed to be dropped into the holes left by the aerator and the seed to have the best chance for seed to soil contact.
