Cool Season (Fescue Turf)

Cool Season (Fescue Turf)

Cool-season fescue turf thrives with proper care and seasonal attention. Our turf services focus on strengthening fescue grass, improving lawn density, and addressing common issues related to soil conditions, weather patterns, and seasonal stress.

Cool Season Turf: Fescue

The most common types of cool season turf in North Carolina are tall Fescue, fine Fescue, and Kentucky blue grass.

For cool season turf our programs follow this treatment schedule:

  • Apply fertilizer through the growing season based on the schedule below.
  • Apply broadleaf and grassy weed control as needed.
  • You should use no herbicides 30 days prior to over-seed to make sure no chemicals are left in soil to prevent germination, and at least 30 to 60 days after seeding.
  • Fall/Core aeration, with starter fertilizer, and over-seed of fescue (seed and fertilizer for this portion will have an additional charge for product)
  • Winter/ winter granular fertilizer with broadleaf weed control
  • Winter/ liquid fertilizer, pre-emergent, micronutrients, broadcast spray post emergent control for broadleaf weeds
  • Spring/ liquid fertilizer, second pre-emergent application, broadcast spray post emergent control for broadleaf weeds
  • Spring/ granular fertilizer, post emergent control for broadleaf weeds
  • Late Spring/liquid fertilizer, micronutrients, broadcast spray post emergent for broadleaf and grassy weeds, with liquid insecticide
  • Early summer/ broadcast spray for broadleaf and grassy weeds liquid insecticide
  • Mid-summer/ Granular insecticide, spot spray for grassy and broadleaf weeds
  • Late summer/ prep for aeration and seed, spot spraying of selective and non-selective herbicides for grassy and broadleaf weeds
  • Watering is VERY important. We recommend watering at least one inch per week. This can be accomplished with rain and supplemental water by you. It is important to account for evaporation during the hot summer months to achieve the one-inch total per week. If a rainstorm produces a deluge of water, you may need to supplement water throughout the week to ensure proper saturation of the soil.
  • Lawn Impressions recommendations for mow heights are between 3.5” and 5”, with the optimum being 4”. We recommend mowing weekly and alternating your mow pattern. This will decrease the amount of thatch and will keep you from making ruts from mowing the same pattern repeatedly.
  • In the fall you should mow your lawn very short in preparation for aeration and over-seeding at no higher than 2” making sure to remove all thatch.
